CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY BOARD LAUNCHES COST AND PRODUCTIVITY TASK FORCE

The Construction Industry Board's Working Groups have completed their tasks and confirmed the feasibility of Sir Michael Latham's target of reducing real costs by 30% by the year 2000. The report, to be published in the autumn, sets out the numerous ways in which economies and improvements can be made.

Announcing the formation of the new task force Don Ward, the CIB's Chief Executive said "This is to be the main vehicle responsible for ensuring the promotion and realisation of the improvements for the benefit both of the clients and the industry".

The Chairman of the task force is Mike Newens of NatWest Bank and of the Construction Clients' Forum. Other guidelines to be published by the autumn include: briefing, clients construction strategy, selecting subcontractors, training and the image of the industry.

Real benefits for Real Clients

The Construction Clients' Forum recently celebrated its second anniversary having achieved much, but the next stage is to help improve value for all clients. The CCF is now seen as a leading member of the Construction Industry Board and has direct access to Ministers, top representatives of the supply side (the professions, contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers) and senior civil servants.

Even more importantly, the views of the CCF are now sought from the industry on every issue involved in improving quality, reducing costs and improving value. The membership covers all sectors of on-shore clients through its umbrella bodies, which include The CBI, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, the British Property Federation, the Construction Round Table, the European Construction Institute, the Capital Projects Constructors Group and by direct public sector clients - the MoD, Highways Agency, NHS Estates, Committee of Vice Chancellors & Principals as well as senior DoE and Treasury representatives.

The forum is now keen to speed the lines of communication by inviting private sector clients, not already represented, to join as associate members. These new members will be on the inside track of Construction Procurement developments and will be able to contribute their views.
Companies seeking improved value from the industry should be interested at CEO level and be able to contribute their views via operational and/or professional staff.
